“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace. But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.” Luke 11:21-22
Jesus spent much of His earthly ministry healing those afflicted with every sort of terrible malady. He did it in various ways: a look, a word, the touch of a finger . . . or perhaps someone touching the hem of His garment in the midst of a crowd. His absolute authority and deep love for all that He has made was repeatedly demonstrated with tender compassion and humility. His teaching exerted power over terrible maladies of the mind, too often waylaid by misunderstandings regarding His heavenly Father’s character, error in doctrine, cruelty or neglect by fellow human beings . . . all of which can be traced back to the great deceiver. This strong man, fully armed, is most definitely guarding “his own palace,” this world which he gained access to through nefarious means. The armor in which he trusted is a hard shell of deceptions and misrepresentations. Jesus, our Redeemer, is the stronger than he who graciously brings light and clarity, equipping His treasures to discern truth and error, and move accordingly. The power of His love, if received, will overcome evil with good. Just prior to our opening verses, Jesus said, “But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.” (v.20)
The earthly ministry of Jesus—which His followers are to continue until His return—is that of reclaiming that which is rightfully His from the usurper whose so-called authority is based on lies and deception. Let us continue in the freedom of truth toward the kingdom of light.
The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein. Psalm 24:1
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21
Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word. Acts 4:29
