The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever. Psalm 111:10
True wisdom leads to a sure knowledge of the unwavering love, compassion, and mercy of God, all of which are behind His divine offer of salvation to mankind. While the vibrant faith of the Waldensian Christians shed light across the world’s background during the Dark Ages, the loving eyes of the God who sees (Genesis 16:13) have never failed to spot the tender hearts of anyone, anywhere that are inclined toward Him.
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. 2 Chronicles 16:9
The “morning star of the Reformation,” John Wycliffe, was born in 14th century England. He was privileged to receive a broad, well-rounded education. His quest for knowledge brought him into close acquaintance with various branches of learning: philosophy, church canons, and civil law. As a young college man, the power of his genius commanded respect of friend and foe alike. During this time, he began an all-out study of Scripture. As the Word was available only in ancient languages, the fountain of truth was open to scholars like himself, but closed to the uneducated masses. His studies revealed the plan of salvation and the reality that Christ is the only advocate for man. His response of overwhelming love for his Savior awakened in him a determination to proclaim these truths.
Jesus said, “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.” Matthew 10:27
Wycliffe did not deliberately set himself in opposition to Rome. But inevitably, as the extensive errors were exposed by the Light, he fearlessly sought that the Bible be restored to the people and its authority re-established within the church. The more clearly he discerned the errors of the papacy, the more earnestly he presented the teachings of the Word. Wycliffe’s example should encourage us today to faithfully proclaim God’s truth even as Satan bears down harder than ever—as a wolf in sheep’s clothing—to perpetuate long-held deceptions. Jesus, the true Shepherd, will gently lead all who desire to follow Him.
For thus says the LORD GOD: “Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall feed themselves no more; for I will deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them . . . Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out.” Ezekiel 34:10-11
