Devotion for September 2
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. Genesis 2:16-17
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You shall not surely die.” Genesis 3:4
Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7
“As long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak wickedness.” Job 27:3-4a
The body without the spirit is dead. James 2:26
The soul who sins shall die. Ezekiel 18:4b&20a
The wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23a
The dead do not praise the LORD. Psalm 115:17
The living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing. Ecclesiastes 9:5a
“Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. For David did not ascend into the heavens…” Acts 2:29,34a
His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Psalm 146:4 KJV
Man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep…His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he does not perceive it. Job 14:12,21
The day of the Lord will come…in which the heavens will pass away” 2 Peter 3:10
“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” Revelation 22:12
The Savior’s victory over sin and death cannot be fully appreciated apart from believing that God meant what He said from the very start about the reality of death and its undeniable status as the consequence of sin, defined in the Bible as “lawlessness” (1 John 3:4). Satan is behind the confusion about death; he has the world believing that dead people are alive, that souls cannot die, and that the punishment for the unsaved is eternal life in a fiery chamber of horror. God has lovingly given us hundreds of reminders in the Scriptures that people, both righteous and unrighteous, die. This is because denial of death is such a prevalent philosophy and the root of many deceptions. But for all who have given their trust and allegiance to Jesus, an indescribably wonderful, climactic Day is coming!
The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
