“Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness…” Matthew 8:10b-12a
Biblical scholars largely agree that the most sublime sermon ever preached was the “Sermon on the Mount” (contained in Matthew 5-7). Like the facets of a sparkling diamond, Jesus masterfully presented various aspects of sound theology. It is fascinating to see the positive responses of a variety of people in chapter 8, both Jew and Gentile. What joy it brings to God’s heart when the objects of His divine love respond to Him in love! It is also very instructive to see in the Scriptures the many negative reactions to the message that Jesus has for us. Same message, two responses.
After laboring in the Alpine parish, Ulric Zwingli was called to preach at a convent in Einsiedeln. This setting provided a closer view of Rome’s corruptions. There in Einsiedeln was a statue of the Virgin Mary with an inscription: “Here a plenary remission of sins may be obtained.” Pilgrimages year-round were made, but a yearly festival brought multitudes from around Europe. The sight greatly distressed Zwingli and he seized the opportunity to address crowds:
“Do not imagine that God is in this temple more than any other part of creation. Whatever be the country in which you dwell, God is near and He hears you…God looks upon the heart, and our hearts are far from Him. Christ, who was once offered upon the cross, is the sacrifice…that had made satisfaction for the sins of believers to all eternity.”
There were those present who rejoiced at the glad tidings of redemption through the blood of Christ! They had followed the many observances that came from Rome but had failed to experience true peace. In faith, they welcomed the gospel message of the Savior’s blood as their propitiation. Tomorrow we shall view a different reaction to Zwingli’s statement…
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. Psalm 139:7-9
“Do you people think that I am some local deity and not the transcendent God?” the LORD asks. “Do you really think anyone can hide himself where I cannot see him?” the LORD asks. “Do you not know that I am everywhere?” the LORD asks. Jeremiah 23:23-24
