March 2: THE REMNANT DESCRIBED (part 1)
Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Revelation 12:1
The aged apostle whom we call John the Revelator received astonishing visions from Jesus that are given to guide, encourage, and equip His followers, especially in these last days of fallen earth’s history. The above verse is one of seven in Revelation that provides descriptive information about the remnant of God’s last-day people. This description is a practical help for anyone who desires to be a part of that remnant.
So, what does this great sign signify? John looks toward heaven and sees this magnificently beautiful woman, clothed with the sun. Malachi describes Jesus as The Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4:2), and now John sees the Lord’s bride wearing the brilliant and spotless robe of Christ’s righteousness. It is a wedding garment (see Matthew 22:12, 2 Corinthians 5:3, Revelation 3:4). This woman symbolizes the church, and she knows that His righteous covering is absolutely essential for salvation, just as she is taught in the holy Scriptures (see Isaiah 61:10).
She has the moon under her feet. At night, the moon reflects the light of the sun, just as God’s word provides spiritual light in the darkness of our fallen world. She is standing firmly upon this word. By faith, she will be enabled to enter the narrow gate (Matthew 7:13, Luke 13:24) that leads to life. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
As His bride, she is taking His name. She wants to bring honor to His name, and she trusts His leadership. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. (Psalm 23:3) The symbolic number representing organized leadership in God’s kingdom is twelve. The twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles display continuity throughout all of Scripture. This continuity is also dramatically illustrated by Jesus just before He called the twelve disciples to send them out with great power (see Luke 8:40-9:2).
The garland of twelve stars on the head of Christ’s bride symbolizes her leadership role in spreading the invitation throughout the world to choose Jesus. She is led by the Spirit of God. By grace, she rises to the task afforded her by heavenly citizenship (Philippians 3:20). She is ready. She is organized for service. Those who hear her and accept the heavenly message join in to multiply the best invitation ever!
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely. Revelation 22:17
