March 13: REALISTIC PERSPECTIVE

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. Revelation 1:3

Makarios is the Greek word that is translated “blessed” or “happy.” It is the same word that Jesus used to begin His opening statements in the sermon on the mount (see Matthew 5:1-11). The two English meanings are bound together, for if someone is blessed but doesn’t appreciate his blessings, there is no happiness connected to it. Also, it is possible to be haphazardly “happy” about temporal circumstances or things that are not blessings at all!

To the humble and sincere seeker of God, there is a deep and abiding happiness that comes with hearing from Him. At the time John’s letter was circulating, it was customary for someone to stand before the assembly and read aloud for everyone to hear. The intent of Revelation is clear: it is meant for all of the church, whether readers or hearers, from the first century up to this minute.

One may ask why this message was signified, or written with “signs”? Considering the very public setting in which it was read aloud, as well as the wide availability of God’s word today, this kaleidoscope of subtle, vivid, or even bizarre symbols is intended to communicate meaning to sincere seekers of God. They know where to look for clarity. As the only apostle still alive, John was entrusted with visions to convey to the church. These visions would encourage, uplift, and add realistic perspective to the world scenario between the ascension of Jesus into heaven as our great High Priest and His victorious return for His bride as King of kings and Lord of lords. This vitally important message for His people was purposefully hidden from malevolent adversaries who would destroy it. The careful student of God’s word will be rewarded with the unveiling of the meaning behind the symbolic language of Revelation.

The word keep simply means to hold close and obey. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; And knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10). The Spirit of God has a very logical and reasonable way of revealing the “why” behind all of His marvelous instructions. He has our best interest at heart. He provides, but do I accept His provision? He offers protection, but do I step out from under it? He is generous with me, but am I stingy with others? It is way past time to put selfish and erroneous ways aside.

…for the time is near. There are seven statements of urgency* regarding the nearness of the end of time as we know it in the book of Revelation. This emphasis, if taken correctly, will add energy and enthusiasm (not panic!) to our daily lives. This world, so tainted with sin and heartbreak, will not be allowed to continue.

Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. Daniel 12:10
