Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were was completed. Revelation 6:11

We continue our study of the opening of the fifth seal (Revelation 6:9-11), a beautiful illustration of God’s loving regard for His oppressed and persecuted people throughout history. We need never think that a single one is forgotten! In every age His faithful followers willingly learn to “die to self” through submission to His will, from the day of salvation to the end of life in this fallen world. Many have been martyred for their faith, and verse 11 informs us that there are more martyrdoms to come. While teaching the reality of death, God’s Word also conveys His power over death. For those who die in Christ, death is not the last word. Beloved, be encouraged to “die daily” to sin (1 Corinthians 15:31), knowing that your life is safely “hidden with Christ…”

For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Colossians 3:3-4

If apparent contradictions arise in Scripture, the true student of God’s Word will regard them as invitations to go deeper. Too often such “contradictions” appear because of superficial reading. The truth of God’s Word is taught in progression, precept upon precept (Isaiah 28:10). Other passages will reinforce, highlight, and/or clarify. The Master Teacher presents truth and then proceeds to review and expand. God’s purpose is that His people would deepen their studies, comparing scripture to scripture, in order to grow in faith and take firm hold of the miracle of the Infinite God condescending to communicate with finite man.

Our adversary would have us isolate single scriptures without benefit of the whole counsel of God, and thus twist our understanding. The opening verse above has been misused to support the erroneous doctrine that people are alive while dead. As we examine the last verse of the fifth seal above, let us remember:

1. God’s intent for us is to live with Him eternally (Genesis 2:9).

2. His loving warning that disobedience to Him will result in death (Genesis 2:17).

3. Satan’s deceitful statement that disobedience to God won’t really result in death (Genesis 3:4).

4. God’s provision of forgiveness and a second chance for those who by faith accept the free gift of salvation and respond in love and gratitude by continuing in His grace on the path of obedience.

He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:3
