So the first [angel] went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. Revelation 16:2

The worldwide plagues that befall the earth before Jesus returns are not arbitrary. When the mark of the beast crisis begins, there is no visible distinction between those who have the mark in their forehead or hand, and those who have the seal of God in their forehead. John’s vision shows us that when the plagues begin, all those who believe in, or just go along with, man’s plan to create an earthly utopia will be distinguished from those who choose to hold to God’s standard.

Those who do not support the “one world” plan will be punished as troublemakers. Suddenly, they will no longer be allowed to buy or sell (13:17). Modern technology will allow this to happen easily. This punishment is also intended to pressure God’s people to forsake Him and go along with the plan.

Satan is behind this idea to block buying and selling for God’s people. It is to mock the rest from commerce that marks the keeping of the weekly Sabbath day. When God reminded His rescued people of His holy day (Exodus 20:8-11, see also Isaiah 58:13), He included a reminder that a weekly Sabbath rest was for everyone (even the animals). To your stranger within your gates, this rest would be a surprising and welcoming invitation to learn of and honor the Creator who made our world in six days. Satan desires honor for himself (see Isaiah 14:13-14, Matthew 4:9), therefore he hates the Sabbath.

So this first plague will make a visible and very odiferous distinction between those who honor man’s law above God’s and God’s people who would rather suffer the wrath of man than to dishonor their beloved Creator and Redeemer. Those with God’s seal will simply continue to rest in His word, keep His commandments, and trust Him for every need.

The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned. Psalm 34:22
