Then [Peter] said to [the gathering of Gentiles], “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.  Acts10:28b

Let us clarify the difference between what Almighty God actually instructed and the man-made law that led to the derogatory use of name-calling. God’s people had been instructed not to make a covenant with pagans (Exodus 23:32 and 34:12,16). The marriage covenant was highlighted so that God’s people would not be constantly exposed to the worship of false gods, bringing such practices into their homes and communities. Also among the pagans was the widespread practice of polygamy which was never God’s intention for marriage.

Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it. Deuteronomy 12:32 (see also 4:2)

It is essential to be careful in gaining an understanding of God’s word. In their enthusiasm to avoid intermarriage, they made it “illegal” to even speak to or go near non-Hebrews. Referring to non-Hebrews as dogs, pigs, snakes, etc became the accepted norm. This facilitated a breakdown of the entire purpose for God’s people which was to spread the Gospel to the world. Honoring the LORD through humble obedience to His word has a drawing effect upon those who do not yet know Him. How our adversary must revel whenever God’s professed people are arrogant, “holier than thou”, and crown this ungodly behavior with insulting terms toward unbelievers.

In finally overcoming this attitude which had been widely taught among the Jews, Peter was instrumental in the joyful story of Cornelius and his household recorded in Acts 10 and 11. Gaining a view into God’s great heart of love for all people is a blessing that will usher in discernment and sensitivity toward needy hearts that are truly seeking God’s kingdom. To miss this lesson can create a void that will only too readily be filled by the archenemy who desires to inflict harm. In this case, those who have missed the intended lesson are allowing the Deceiver to put his harmful substitute idea in place. Peter’s vision of the sheet of unclean animals is commonly cited as a withdrawal of God’s instructions for healthy eating. But in reality, God was utilizing Peter’s correct understanding regarding eating to break down barriers between people; barriers that would hinder the spread of the Good News. This was continued training for the mission of the disciples. Be aware that a wrong interpretation of Scripture can serve as an invitation to the enemy to enter and wreak havoc.

You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. Deuteronomy 4:2 (see also Revelation 22:18-19)
