For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

An acute awareness and recognition of the “ways of the world” that work against God’s desire for holiness in each of us will save incalculable time and heartache, including negative influences upon others, if we will choose to develop it. We should desire to develop our “awareness skills” of spiritual wickedness in high places, which—by contrast—also intensifies our appreciation of those around us who also desire to live by the spirit of truth rather than the spirit of error (see 1 John 4:6)

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

What if I decided to take seriously 2 Corinthians 10:5 by “casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”? It would mean that whenever I am confronted with any idea that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, I will reject it on the spot. If the idea returns, I must reject it again. It is in entertaining such ideas that my will to stand for the truth of Christ is weakened.

The law of love being the foundation of the government of God, the happiness of all intelligent beings depends upon their perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness. God desires from all His creatures the service of love—service that springs from an appreciation of His character.  He takes no pleasure in forced obedience; and to all He grants freedom of will, that they may render Him voluntary service. PATRIARCHS AND PROPHETS by E.G.White (p.34)
