September 10: WORSHIP HIM WHO MADE . . .

The Old Testament is marked with warnings against worshiping idols. Often idols were wood, metal, or stone fashioned by human hands. No such thing is worthy of our worship. Though we should be taught true worship, according to God’s terms and not our own, the psalmist writes: Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell; They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat. Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them (Psalm 115:4-8).
It is a fact that people will not rise higher than what they worship. Individuals who bow before statues of calves, frogs, fish, bulls, etc. are not exactly aiming high. In modern culture, the worship of money, power, popularity, celebrities, or self is also not aiming high. Media, music, and entertainment reinforce worship of an endless list of idols that are not worthy of worship.
But false worship is especially deadly when it is mixed deceptively with bits of Bible truth. This is why the last book of the Bible warns so harshly against the worship of the beast, a deceptive religious organization that claims to represent heaven.
Humans are designed by God to worship. We are called to worship the Creator, for He is worthy of worship. You can see from the fourth commandment (Exodus 20:11) the inspiration for the words: worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea… Our Creator is beyond amazing. As the Giver of Life, He designed and planned every detail to meet every possible need. The words springs of water are a reference to the Source of refreshing, as well as a subtle reference to the fountains of the great deep (Genesis 7:11), a reminder of the worldwide flood. God was incredibly grieved over the condition of men (6:5) when He carried out destruction of the world by water.
No matter who we are, we will worship something. Worship is at the center of the conflict between good and evil.
You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created. Revelation 4:11
