May 28: THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD

Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon. Daniel 2:48

The tendency of fallen man to wrongly direct his worship is consistently evident, even in the capable and accomplished king of Babylon. But by his actions in today’s verse, we see that he accepted Daniel’s counsel without offense and, at least for a moment, shifted his gaze toward the God of heaven.

Early in this chapter, Nebuchadnezzar had made serious threats and lavish promises to the Chaldeans, regarding the dream…and its interpretation (v.5). If they could “come up with the goods” they would receive gifts, rewards, and great honor (v.6) from the king. Today we see that Nebuchadnezzar followed through with many great gifts, also conferring upon Daniel the great honor of becoming ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon. This scenario echoes the elevation of Joseph from the Egyptian dungeon to a position as Egypt’s prime minister (Genesis 41:41). God’s purposes being honored in both situations, countless people were helped that they might see the providence of God.

At the time, Babylon was the world’s most powerful and influential empire. Revelation’s language utilizes Babylon as a symbol for the world’s last-day coalition that will exercise power and influence the world over (see chapters 17 & 18 of Revelation). But those who cultivate a love of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10) will not go hungry, spiritually speaking. Just as Joseph led Egypt to store abundant grain during the days of plenty, God has made His word abundantly available now, before the onslaught of false teaching is enforced by law (Revelation 13:13-17). Beloved, do you see the providence of God in your life? Today is the day, and now is the time to seize the opportunity to study the Word of God.

The promotion given to Daniel by the king was recognized by Daniel as the hand of God. As a faithful friend and servant of the Most High, he would utilize the position for the glory of His kingdom, for the salvation of souls. Daniel knew vast amounts of Scripture by heart. The words of David likely came to his mind…

You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. You enlarged my path under me, So my feet did not slip. Psalm 18:35-36
