May 2: THE PROMISE KEEPER

And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac. Genesis 21:1-3

The work of God is sovereign, overcoming the impossibilities of human effort. His life-changing acts are foretold. The phrase - as He had said - refers to His earlier announcement: “But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you [Abraham] at this set time next year.” (17:21) Notice the emphasis on the fulfillment of this promise: He…did…as He had spoken. Our God is a promise keeper. The birth of Isaac is a sign that God's promises are fulfilled by His power.

The name Isaac means laughter. The baby’s name brings attention to Sarah’s initial laughter of doubt (18:12), but especially highlights the transformation to joyous laughter that came at his birth! This story beautifully illustrates God’s faithfulness, His perfect timing, and the joy that comes to those who put their faith in Him. We would all greatly benefit from internalizing the fact that He means what He says.

And the LORD visited Sarah… If we view Sarah, a woman, as a symbol for God’s people (or church), a visitation from the LORD should produce godly offspring. When this happens, the divine plan of salvation – the justification and sanctification of humble sinners who desire salvation – becomes a reality. The family of God grows and multiplies. Soon, the ultimate reality of glorification of the lives of God’s repentant children will come to pass. Another name for this great plan of salvation is the everlasting gospel (Revelation 14:6).

The One who keeps His promises has given these assurances to every dear soul who humbly looks to Him for every need: He will be with you; He will not leave you. You can accomplish what He has called you to do and nothing will be impossible for you. Your life will be more abundant and you will have fullness of joy. There is no need to fear what people might do to you, for in the Lord, you will have perfect peace.
