My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 (NIV)

The world is in a mess and every one of us has contributed to it. Paul was addressing the Corinthian church that he had founded (see Acts 18:1-17). A tremendous variety of problems were in this church which consisted of recently pagan people called by God to make an exit from  paganism. But with those problems are also glorious opportunities to showcase the “long arm” of God’s salvation, His endless mercy, and the hope instilled in those who believe the message. Up to this very minute, paganism seems to have an endless variety of ongoing attractions to offer. The Old Testament writings are bursting at the seams with warnings about these things. Those chosen to be in possession of God’s truth fell over and over again for these attractions. Nothing has changed in that regard. There is a need for people everywhere and in every age to gain an awareness of the enemy’s devices, designed to draw the objects of God’s affection—people!—into sin.

In light of the power of Satan’s temptations, it is often asked why God chooses weak human vessels to carry His Gospel to the world. Paul’s words in the passage above lead us toward an answer. But, more important than answers to our questions, is our need to allow the Lord into our areas of stubbornness and willful ignorance. Getting alone with Him is key. Be still. The Holy Spirit’s power is where our faith must rest. Otherwise we will look to our own thoughts and ideas, our friends, or any other human wisdom that seeks to take our attention captive.

Remember that Jesus came in the form of a helpless baby into this messy world. This time of year, He would be approaching the age of about three months! Hold that Baby close to your heart. Watch Him grow up. Listen to His words. See Him on the cross! Love Him! Love others! Jesus said:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” John 14:15

“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” John 15:9-10
