August 8: Despisers of Authority

…the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations… 2 Peter 2:9a

Our Christian education is not only about avoiding temptations, but also about learning the many ways that the Lord can (and does!) come to our aid when we are thrust into a tempting situation that is not of our making. Of course, we are not to actively pursue or create temptations in any form, but our world is a minefield of opportunities to go against the authority of Yahweh. Peter specifically warned about false teachers among you who will secretly bring in destructive heresies (2 Peter 2:1). The element of secrecy testifies to the cunning operation that Satan executes among the people of God. So how are we to identify these destructive heresies? It must be by the word of God. Our Lord said:

“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.” John 18:20

Peter continues from our opening verse: the Lord knows how…to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgement, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. 2 Peter 2:10a

To despise authority has meaning that ranges from a weak failure to acknowledge authority to an outright loathing of it. Peter goes on to describe those within this range as presumptuous and self-willed. The stronger within this range continually exercise influence over the weaker for enticing unstable souls (v.14). But remember, Peter’s harsh condemnation is prefaced by this counterpoint: …the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations. This is encouraging news!

Know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly. Psalm 4:3

Looking to Him in faith while actively seeking to place oneself under His umbrella of authority describes a godly one. To view our Creator as the God who knows what is best for His creatures is a solid foundation for wholeheartedly building proper recognition of His authority. Our Christian education also consists of learning to trust and obey the One whose love for each of us is unmatched in all of the universe.

The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” Jeremiah 31:3
